Now with 19 years of  experience and expertise in design, computer programming, copy editing, search engine optimization, marketing and usability, Kat & Mouse is leveraged to bring success to any organization seeking a web presence.

Meet the Founder

Kathy Long, aka 'Kat'

Before diving into the Internet, Kathy worked in Marketing Communications for Seagate Technology where she honed her skills in copywriting, graphic design, business presentations, and multimedia. She left in 1993 to run the computer education department at a local elementary school. In that position while the web was in its infancy, she built the school's first website, then went on as an educator with the Santa Cruz Department of Education and taught teachers throughout the county how to bring the Internet into their curriculum.

In 1995 she created NetCafé, the first internet web portal for restaurants, and leveraged database integration which was new to the web at the time. Shortly after, she started her own web development firm, Kat & Mouse Web Design and in that position has served hundreds of clients from Santa Cruz to Taiwan up to the present. In 2000 she also co-founded and acted as CEO of SITE-etc, a web hosting and application provider. Together with her partner and programmer, they designed and developed dozens of cutting edge, plug-in web applications including event calendar, job posting, newsletter subscription, private membership, ecommerce, bulletin board, message board, database forms, and contact form applications to name a few. It was there that she developed skills in software design, and through fielding tech support calls and complaints she quickly learned the art of user-friendly interface design.

Kathy knows the web. She knows business. She knows design. She also knows human interaction and behavior. She knows how to build your online business.

When she's not working, Kathy's probably dancing West Coast Swing or practicing for a ballroom dance competition. Think twice if she tells you she needs to get to a board meeting. She's really meeting up with the floor boards at the local dance studio.

Meet the Menagerie

JoAnn Baldwin, Internet Strategist

JoAnn's experience with the web  stepped into the world of the Internet in 1998 when she designed websites for Cabrillo College, Foothill - DeAnza Community College District and Monterey County Office of Education. In early 2000, she moved into internet marketing and site optimization and in that field has been instrumental in formulating and implementing strategic site planning to improve site ranking and retention. She has successfully consulted with numerous organizations, from start-ups to established businesses, in launching a viable online presence.

JoAnn has a passion for technology and is committed to providing the most current and up-to-date practices and services in internet business development. She enjoys keeping up on the current trends in online marketing and further honing her skills as a internet marketing strategist.

Additionally, JoAnn has an MBA and certification in organizational development from Gonzaga University. Her graduate work was concentrated in business planning, marketing, and organizational leadership.

In her spare time, you will find JoAnn working towards causes near and dear to her heart, helping causes and organizations which support a sustainable future locally and globally. Working in that vein, JoAnn is the co-organizer of Green Business Camp Santa Cruz Fall 2009, a unconference bringing together green business owners and entrepreneurs for collaboration and networking. You might also find JoAnn happily hiking the trails with her two loveable dogs, Scout and Zoae.

Darren Odden, Lead Programmer

Darren Odden is the lead web programmer for Kat & Mouse. He started his professional software development career at Borland International where he became heavily involved in database design and development in C and C++. He now calls himself a forward thinking web application developer and system architect with the ability to implement organizational goals. He comes with fifteen years experience in Fortune 500 companies and business start-ups where he provided innovative technical solutions and is well versed in the entire scope of the software development life cycle from planning through to support and end of life. He has a strong background in Linux, web development technologies, and SQL data systems. He has developed programs with true global implications in Europe, Asia, and North and South Americas.

Darren's technical skills include: AJAX, CSS, PHP, Zend, Doctrine, Drupal, Joomla, SugarCRM, Java, C#, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase, MS SQL, Berkely JDB, XML, Linux, Oracle, JavaScript, C++, Windows, MS Project, Maven2, Jira. His full resume can be found here.

Evelyn Avanti, Web Copywriter and Copy Editor

Since childhood, wordsmith Evelyn Avanti has enjoyed playing with words. She began honing her skills with such word puzzles as crosswords and anagrams, and word games such as Boggle and Scrabble, and has evolved into writing professionally, including copywriting, proofreading and editing. In addition, Evelyn's background in psychology and understanding of human behavior aids her in creating the effect you want with your target audience. She is also an award winning public speaker proving that she knows how to craft words that make an impression. She has an eye for arranging words to create a written work of art.
